As you all are aware Poppy seed patta announcement is made last week there has been some serious cut down on the production of poppy seeds next year.
Recently, several leading importers approached the Prime Minister’s Office, the Principal Secretary, and the Ministry of Finance to seek reopening of poppy seed imports. However, the Ministry has clearly stated in writing that the Government of India stands firm on its decision to protect Indian farmers and promote Atma Nirbhar Bharat. As per the government’s firm position, no imports will be allowed until Diwali 2026 nex year, until the Indian farmers’ poppy seeds is fully sold in the domestic market.
This decision is supportive of farmers and to promote Atma Nirbhar Bharat.
Current arrivals at Neemuch and Jawra are limited to only 400–500 bags per day, which is far below the consumption requirement. At this level, the market cannot sustain itself, and the duration of such arrivals remains uncertain.
Further, it is anticipated that the 2026 domestic crop will be very short and With imports closed for another full year, there will be shortages of supply in the coming days and weeks.
